I’m not sure if this was a regional ritual or an “English thing” but as quite a young child I remember duting the summer months making perfume with my girlfriends. We’d collect jars from all of our neighbours and families and set about making our own potions. All we would need is two ingredients; flowers and water! Looking back, although we weren’t naughty kids, it was a little shameful what exactly we’d do. We would go around the neighbours gardens and pick the petals from the biggest, healthiest and unusual looking flowers… and never get caught!

Then we’d climb into “our secret perfume den” which was a luxurius place- a hole in the midddle of a bush! We would squash our flowers into the water-filled jars and then shake it… something like developing the flavour, before we would bury the glass jars in the ground with our names on! A couple of day’s later we would return and strain the soggy, stinky petals from our the jars and smell the creations. “Hmm!” We would chorus with glee… although actually it smelt like cat wee and didn’t at all look attractive in the murky brown water.

On returning home, we would present the heavenly scent to our mothers, and insist that she try it. After watching her place the “unique” scent onto her pulse points before she would say “Wow, that is the nicest perfume I have ever smelt in my entire life!” I would be content, and even though I would never see my mother with the perfume again, it didn’t matter because it would be so easy to make more!

At one point, aged about 8, I thought I had the nose of a perfume maker and so my Grandma bought me a “Get Set perfume maker!” I loved it, and had fun for hours mixing the ingredients and pouring the juice into the cute containers (much more sophisticated than our jars!)

It kind of saddens me now to see so many perfumes for very young children on the market. However, if you are stuck for a gift for your 8 year old niece look no further.

Barbie™ Fragrance
“Love makeup, lotions and potions? Spritz on “B,” the latest perfume from Barbie™! It smells like berries and candy apples! Every bottle comes with a sparkly charm you can wear anywhere. There’s also a stylin’ gift set that comes with perfume, a trendy tank top, or a pretty pink belt!”

Barbie™ Fragrance 2

“Hey, stylish girl! Need a perfume as fresh and pretty as you are? Try the new scent from Barbie™! It smells like flowers and light citrus. Choose between gift sets that include either a cuddly bear coin purse or a hip pink handbag. They’re sweet, sassy, and so you!”

Both can be purchased at the Barbie website!

You work for a strong, male orientated business. Sometimes you feel pushed into the background with all the male ego’s in your way. But you have good ideas, you’re smart and you look good. So what do you wear to hypnotize them with your scent on the business trip of a lifetime?

Remember, not to wear anything too pretty; you want everybody to be listening to you, not going “ga-ga” over your perfume. Obviously, Agent Provocateur or Victoria’s Secret won’t be on the agenda for this occassion… they are too sexy and you will give off the wrong message.

1. Hugo Boss for women is exactly what it say’s on the tin. “…embodies the elements of sophistication” showing your peers who is the boss! The actual fragrance was built around the passion flower; which is rarely used in perfumes before. Take hold of it, and when your standing infront of the board of directors, do it with compassion.

2. Chanel no. 19, not as well known as Chanel no.5 but in my nose just as classy and sophisticated. It is a classy and light scent with leathery tones conveying your sense of quality.

3. Chanel Bois de lles is one of the hardest Chanel fragrances to find. (If its not in a major department store try online.) it’s not at all a prettty scent, but very woody and deep. It is warm (melting the ice king!), and is the epitome of understated elegance.

4. Eau de Givenchy opens with bright citrus and green notes, and just the tiniest bit of mint conveying a cheerful and sparkling you… ready to take on the world, or at least putting a smile on others faces.

It might seem silly “How to choose a perfume that suits you”, but like shoes, make up, hairstyles and clothes some things compliment us, and others don’t. How often have you smelled a friends perfume and commented how gorgeous it is, but when you apply the same perfume to your own skin the scent is somewhat different and you dislike it. That’s because we’ve all got different skin, and our skin allows a fragrance to come to life. Sometimes when blended with your own chemistry a perfume smells sensational, and at other times hideous… however it means that whichever perfume you choose it will be unique!

Depending upon your personality and preference, perfume tones range from deep, dark, and mysterious (vanillas, sandalwood, and patchoulli), to light, outgoing, airy, and romantic (citrus, rose, gardenia and jasmine). What part of your personality do you want to express and accentuate? What would you like to bring out that isn’t apparent to others most of the time?

It may be that brunettes choose deeper, darker fragrances and most blondes and redheads choose the lighter and fresher tones. But, you may be a person who just loves the deepness of sandalwood with musk and happen to be a blonde! Fragrances are fun to experiment with this way.

Remember that perfumes have three layers:
Top note: This is what you smell immediately after applying the perfume. It is your first impression, but is also very volatile. It fades quickly.
Middle note: For several minutes to an hour after applying perfume, you can smell the middle note. The smell of the perfume mellows.
Base note: After thirty minutes, you smell the base note. It blends with the middle note to provide the main theme of the perfume. The base note is the richer smell.

Fragrance Dos:

Do allow the fragrance to come out of itself, remember, a fragrance has three layers. Be patient!

Do change your perfume with the change of the season. In winter you may need a stronger scent as the cold may reduce the scent’s power.

Do shop for perfume in the afternoon when your sense of smell is at its peak.

Do wear more fragrance if you have dry skin; you will need to apply fragrances more often than those who have oily skin.

Do apply your perfume after you have showered and dried completely.

Do apply perfume to your pulse points for maximum effect.

Fragrance Don’ts:

Don’t wear another fragrance the day you are perfume shopping, it will react and not smell the same.

Don’t overdo it. Overpowering smells can make the people around you very uncomfortable and may even cause headaches.

Don’t spray perfume near pearls or costume jewelry. Because perfume is infused with alcohol it can strip these jewels and remove their coating.

Don’t combine perfume with deodorant or deodorant soap. The combination smell may be unpleasant.

Don’t buy perfume without testing it on your own skin first. Spray a little on your skin and wear it for a few hours to see how it reacts and also to determine how long it lasts.

Don’t rub the fragrance once applied. Rubbing damages the molecules and change the notes.

It was great. Your mother thinks he’s a gem, your father laughs at his jokes and your brother supports the same football team…
This week you are about to meet HIS mother…

She still stays in contact with his ex and he is the only child and it will take one hell of a woman to win her boy’s heart…

Bewitch her with the most powerful perfume potion…

Here’s what you do;
A few days before the big day, ask one of your male friends to pretend he is a market researcher. When he phones her tell him to ask her as many questions as possible about the products she likes. Remember to include a variety of things; cleaning, bath, confectionary products and somewhere in the middle of the call (you don’t want this question to be memorable for her) ask her favourite perfume. Buy your friend a beer for helping you out, and present the gift to her to win her heart!

And which scent should you wear?
Use a perfume which is sweet but not sickly; innocent little girl facade will be unveiled by the intuition of an experienced woman. Don’t wear anything too sexy or provocative, but something classy.

Try Estee Lauder Pleasures, a flowery scent, which isn’t too heavy but very beautiful. It will convey your “mature” side with its classy yet not overstated scent. Found at most department stores from $27.50-$65

You can never own enough beautiful Lingerie, and the same goes with perfume; one bottle is never enough…

Wouldn’t it be nice to own a perfume for all occassions? Or to put an outfit on and decide which one of your vast collection fits? And most importantly wouldn’t it be great to have a perfume suited to every single one of your moods?
Well here’s your chance. I’ve came up with a few ideas to help you on your merry way in expanding your collection…

Please note: If you try any of these (tongue-in-cheek) handy hints I will not be held responsible for anything that may happen to you!

FREEBIES
Next time a new perfume is about to be launched by a big brand go to their website and ususally they have a free sample for every household. Easy and won’t get you into any trouble.
Downside: It’s usually only a one time application, but a good way for you to learn if you like a fragrance

PLAY THE DATING GAME
With Valentines day not far away, spring in the air and then summertime approaching, now is the time to shake off those cobweb’s and start dating. But why commit to a date with one guy, when you could potentially date as many days as there are in the week! Potentially seven different perfumes.
Downside: You could get caughtfall in love with all of them making things very complicated feel soul-less

CHANGE YOUR CAREER PATH
Tell all your girlfriends you have decided to become a perfume-maker. You need to do a lot of research with products but don’t have enough cash to to buy so many bottles. Ask them if they could help with your new life-changing career by donating perfume.
Downside: If your friends find out they will never let you forget it. you may also be branded as a liar and lose your friends.

BECOME MOANING MAVIS
Write a letter of complaint to all the major fragrance brands you know. Complain about anything; cutting your finger on a fragrance bottle or being treated badly by staff in a boutique. Tell the company if they don’t react in a compensational manner you will have no other choice than to take the matter further… Watch the vouchers come rolling in and you can run to the perfume counter to shop!
Downside: You might just recieve a letter of apology making you feel a bit guilty

ACT AS A JOURNALIST
You are a journalist for the day from a fairly well known magazine or newspaper.. Go into all major department stores and explain to the girl at the perfume counter that you are writing a column about customer service, layout of product and variety of perfume brands. At this point ask her if the store recieves enough testers for each perfume brands? When she replies “yes”, say “good, so I will take a selection with me-” before she has a chance to ask why continue, looking charming, honest and intelligent and say “do you know you have been the friendliest person and best store all day? I will remember you…(name, read from her badge). The girl will smile and run into the back for samples… mission complete!
Downside: She asks for your identification or worse, calls security!!! RUN!

With an extensive selection of fragrances and related products which all sell extremely well, Calvin klein has earned the position as one of the leading fragrance brands. With the first unisex scent CKone and brands such as Eternity and Obsession, Calvin Klein, in my opinion, is in a class of it’s own! However, it’s not the fragrances which make me take a second look at the brand… it’s those clever, sexy and provocative advertising campaigns!

Calvin Klein is known for it’s eye catching advertising, and infact, it has been threatened many times by conservative activists because of the brands use of seemingly underage models. one television commercial was banned as it seemed perverted. Maybe, it’s this freshness which creates such a hysteria around the brand? Maybe its the black and white photography? Maybe it’s the quality of the photographers? Whatever it is, Calvin Klein have found a nice little niche in their marketing, and if hysteria is created, then usually it has done the brand a lot of good. Most of the models have been over 16, but it’s their dainty bodies which make them look a lot younger. However, a lot of the ads for fragrances by Calvin klein have women like Scarlett Johansson…hardly a fourteen year old waif… Have a look what you think…

Crave by Calvin Klein

Obsession by Calvin Klein shot Kate Moss to international fame when she was just 19 with her waif like frame she could easilly be as young as 12.

At only 17 Gemma Ward posed provocatively for this ad, again like Ms. Moss looking younger than her years.

Ck One This advertisement caused a stir as it conveyed same sex intamacy and sexual desires.

So are Calvin klein’s advertisement perverted? Pornographic? Or is it simply Art? Judge it for yourself.
